A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE VILLAGE
Valtesiniko is a picturesque village, lying at an altitude of 1160m, in an
area of luxuriant vegetation. It is surrounded by walnut trees, apple
trees, poplars and firs.
Its
people are warm, hospitable and simple.
Crystal
clear water flows in abundance and many natural springs exist all around.
In addition, the village has a Wood Carving School.
SITES TO VISIT
The
Church of Agioi Theodoroi
with its impressive woodcut chancel, at the verdurous sides of Mount
Mainalo. This Church is the village's Cathedral.
The Church
of Agios Georgios
(Saint George), where the visitor can enjoy a bird's eye view of the
entire village. This Church was built in 1830 and it has an impressive
octagonal dome, as well as many windows. Your attention will be definitely
drawn by the entirely carved wooden chancel and by the icon-stand, which
has numerous representations on it.
The Holy
Monastery of Koimiseos Theotokou (Assumption of the Virgin) that
lies at a distance of one kilometer from Agios Georgios. It is an old
catholic monastery, founded in 1625. Today, there are frescos nearly
ravaged by time in it. From there you can see the rocks of the historical
rocky monastery of Agios Nikolaos (Saint Nicolas). A staircase of
100 stairs leads to the cave where the visitor finds two churches: the
church of Agios Nikolaos and that of Analipsi (Ascention), both having
frescos from 1570. The Monastery has crenellations on its walls and crypts
that take the visitor back to the past and, above all, back to 1826, when
Ibraim's army was defeated by a miracle that saved the lives of the women
and children of Vytina and the broader area. Today, there is still
substantial proof of this all around the place.
After
passing Vytina and Kampeas, turn right (there is a relevant sign reading:
TO VALTESINIKO). You will arrive at your destination after a
trip of remarkable beauty, through firs.
